Clamber

Name rarer answers. Build a ladder to the Moon.

Be the first climber today.

  • 10 holds, 20 seconds each. The last one counts ×1.5.
  • Rare answers build more rungs. The most common ones earn nothing.
  • Run out of time and the ladder breaks. Three falls and you lose your grip.

What Clamber is

Clamber is a free trivia game that you play in your browser. It asks for something every day, such as a river in Africa or a band from the seventies, and it pays you for the answer that few other people would give. The ladder you build with those answers rises past real landmarks, from the Statue of Liberty and Mount Everest to the International Space Station, and ends at the Moon. There is no account and no sign-up.

How a climb works

A daily climb has 10 prompts, called holds, and everyone gets the same ones. You have 20 seconds to type an answer for each. Every answer lands in one of six tiers, and the tier decides your rungs: the most common answer adds nothing, a middling one adds 25, and the rarest adds 100. If the clock runs out you fall, and after 3 falls you lose your grip. The last hold is the Summit Push, where gains and losses count ×1.5. Reaching the Moon takes 930 points. The how to play page has the full rules.

Why rare answers score more

Anybody can say the capital of France. The game is more interesting when it rewards the thought that took a second longer. So Clamber looks at how widely known each answer is, and pays more for the ones few people say. If a word you type is not recognised, it costs 2 seconds and you can try another. Our guide how to find rare answers has methods that work.

Where the answers come from

Prompts and answer lists are built from open data: Wikidata for what counts as an answer, and English Wikipedia for how widely known it is. The tiers are fixed before the day starts, so nobody can change them by agreeing on an answer. The guide to how rarity is scored explains the method, and the guides page lists everything else we have written.

Ways to play

  • Daily climb. One attempt a day, and you can compare your result with other players on the leaderboard. Two days after a climb, its prompts and answers are published under past climbs.
  • Endless. No finish line. The clock shrinks as you go and you can climb past the Moon. Try Endless.
  • Theme packs. 8 subjects, from geography to history. See the packs.
  • Landmarks. Each of the 25 landmarks has a page with its real height and the story behind it.

Questions

Is Clamber free?

Yes. It is free to play and needs no account.

Can I see an earlier day's prompts?

Yes, two days after each climb. The past climbs page lists them with the answers the game accepts. Endless and the packs can be played as often as you like.

Why was my answer not accepted?

It may be spelled in a way the game does not know, or it may not be a valid answer for that prompt. Unrecognised answers are recorded and reviewed, and good ones are added later. You can also write to us from the contact page.

Who makes Clamber?

Zane, as an independent project. You can read more on the about page.
